Senior Biology Major Creates Community Through Music
What is it?
Nadia is majoring in biology right now, which is inspired by her grandmother’s passing when she was 7. She is the president of her college’s gospel choir and finds access to community through her singing.
Potential message for students:
Do you think singing makes her a better biologist? Do you think STEM college students give up passion projects to study instead? What are some other examples of hobbies that make for better scientists?

Wistar Scientists Discover Link Between Leaky Gut and Accelerated Biological Aging
What is it?
Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Mohsen and his team believe that stomach problems can lead to accelerated aging. Contents of the gut microbiome may be leaking into the bloodstream.
Potential message to students:
We have different doctors who treat the stomach, the heart, the brain, etc. But do you think one part of human body can cause a disease or condition in another part of the body? Do you think we should have “whole body” doctors who look outside of their specialties?

Voorhees Launches Student Health Ambassador Program
What is it?
A group of biology students at Voorhees University got a $500,000 grant to study health disparities in rural communities. They will organize health and wellness events in these communities.
Potential message to students:
If you heard about one of these health events and it was close by, would you go? Why or why not? Are you impressed that students who have not even graduated college yet are already getting grants and making a difference in the community?
