Touchpoint 1
Orcas demonstrating they no longer need to hunt in packs to take down the great white shark

What is it?
Scientists have determined that killer whales (orcas) like to hunt in packs. Some will kill by themselves, but this is the first time a single orcas has been seen killing a great white shark. The whales are especially interested in eating the shark’s liver.

Potential message to students: Do you think single orcas have been killing these sharks for a long time or do you think this is a new behavior? Do you think predator animals have a special liking for certain parts of animals they kill?

Touchpoint 2
Forensic spray using jellyfish protein could speed up fingerprint detection

What is it?
Police often need to use powders to identify if there are fingerprints left at a crime scene. They may be able to use a spray instead that is found in jellyfish. This sprays shows the fingerprints in 10 seconds.

Potential message to students:
Do students think this is an accidental discovery or scientists set out on a mission to find a better way to show fingerprints? How many of our discoveries as humans do you think are accidents versus well planned experiments?

Touchpoint 3
Innovative coating solution enhances hygiene and reduces corrosion in food storage

What is it?
Harvested produce is often laid out on steel tables to prepare it for sale. Bacteria and fungi can often transfer to the table and latch on to other produce being prepared for sale. A new coating for steel greatly reduces the ability for the bacteria to stick to the table.

Potential message for students:
A professor of chemical engineering teamed up with a professor of horticulture to discover this coating. Do you think more scientists with different specialties should start collaborating more often? Do you think this coating could be used in other industries, like hospitals?
